Backfill for galvanic anodes
Réf. DIP-119
Backfill (fill compound) for zinc and magnesium galvanic anodes: improves current efficiency and provides a uniform low-resistance environment around the anode.
Description
IPSI Solutions offers a wide range of backfill for galvanic and impressed-current anodes, with several mixes available for galvanic anodes. To ensure their proper operation in an underground installation, most sacrificial zinc and magnesium anodes are used with a fill compound completely surrounding them.
Using a chemical fill is justified on several counts: it promotes better current efficiency (the anode being surrounded by a uniform material of known composition) and, thanks to the gypsum, provides a low-resistance environment. By isolating the anode from the native soil, whose compositional variations could cause localised corrosion, it also reduces the risk of passivation: phosphates, carbonates and bicarbonates tend to create a high-resistance film on the zinc surface, which would then stop producing useful protection current.
