MMO tubular anode (LIDA® One): overview

The MMO tubular anodes 'LIDA® One' apply the single-anode concept: one anode, one cable. The latest addition to the mixed-metal-oxide anode family, they are specially designed for the cathodic protection of buried structures, in installations where a single string-mounted anode is preferred for anode beds in soils with highly variable resistivity. Their MMO coating is specially formulated for use in carbonaceous backfill.

They consist of a 1"-diameter titanium tube coated with precious-metal oxide, forming a crystalline electrically conductive coating that activates the titanium. The consumption rate is extremely low (a few milligrams per year), so the tube dimensions remain nearly constant throughout the calculated service life, permanently ensuring low resistance. Lengthening the anode and reducing the total output open up an even more economical range.

The "one anode, one cable" principle

In a conventional anode bed, several anodes connected in parallel share the current, and how it is shared depends on local resistivity. The single-anode string concept simplifies this: one cable, one anode strung along the whole length of the bed. In soils whose resistivity varies strongly from one layer to the next, this avoids having to adjust each anode separately.

When to choose them

MMO tubular anodes are the natural choice for anode beds in carbonaceous backfill on impressed current systems protecting buried structures. Their almost zero consumption keeps resistance constant throughout their service life, whereas a consumable anode sees its resistance rise as it wears.

Plan for

When installed in a borehole, they must stay centred in the hole and surrounded by carbonaceous backfill; an anode centralizer secures this position.
