HI99121 soil pH meter: overview

Soil characteristics (resistivity, pH, presence of SRB, moisture content…) are critical parameters for knowing the corrosion rate of structures. IPSI Solutions offers a range of soil-measurement equipment, including the HI99121 pH meter. This case is designed to measure soil pH directly with good accuracy: the soil must first be moistened to optimise the measurement and preserve the electrode. The case includes a punch to dig the soil and a conical-tip electrode with a built-in temperature sensor (also suited to measurements in solution / diluted samples). For stony soils, use the HI7051 preparation solution.

Why measure pH

An acidic soil accelerates steel corrosion and increases the current needed to protect it. Together with resistivity, pH is one of the environmental survey parameters that precede cathodic protection design: it helps estimate soil aggressiveness and choose design current densities.

When to use it

When surveying a new route, or diagnosing an existing structure showing abnormal corrosion. Direct in-soil measurement in the field avoids waiting for a laboratory analysis for an initial diagnosis.
