Polarisation cell CES 285

Réf. DIP-013

Polarisation cell (Kirk Cell) CES 285: protects buried pipelines against induced AC and earth-fault currents, without blocking cathodic protection.

Description

The polarisation cell, better known as the Kirk Cell, protects buried pipelines against induced alternating currents and earth-fault currents. It lets the low cathodic-protection voltage flow uniformly while blocking dangerous voltages, and acts as an earthing switch in the presence of high voltage.

It consists of steel plates immersed in a 30% KOH (potassium hydroxide) solution, covered by an oil layer that limits evaporation; the transparent body allows the level to be checked. Its operation is electrochemical: the plates polarise and develop a safe DC voltage; when the voltage (DC or AC) exceeds a threshold, the polarisation film breaks down and the cell conducts.

Installation requires great care regarding gas ventilation: improper assembly may produce dangerous gases and lead to an explosion risk. The solution level must be checked periodically.
