Electric brush – Holiday detector K2: overview

The K2.1 electric brush is a coating fault detector (holiday detector) designed to reveal cracks, porosity, under-thickness and other coating discontinuities, internal and external, on metal products. A pulsed high voltage creates a spark at the exact location of the fault.

The output voltage is adjustable from 2 to 35 kV with a resolution of 0.1 kV and is displayed digitally, to inspect coatings up to 12 mm thick. The pulsed operating mode ensures a high level of safety, and the sensitivity is adjustable.

A wide choice of interchangeable electrodes covers the various uses: spring electrodes for pipes up to 1,620 mm in diameter, specialised disc electrodes for the internal inspection of pipes from 30 to 1,420 mm, and inspection of coatings on concrete and other conductive substrates. Compact and lightweight, the device offers up to 8 hours of battery life.

Why test the coating before backfilling

The coating protects the pipeline; cathodic protection only deals with the defects it leaves. Every defect not repaired before backfilling becomes a point where protection must deliver current, and the more there are, the more current the system needs. Holiday detection just before lowering-in is therefore the step that sets the protection cost for the entire service life.

How to set the voltage

The test voltage depends on coating thickness and type: too low, it misses defects; too high, it can damage sound coating. It is set according to the coating specification or the applicable standard, hence the value of fine adjustment and a digital display of the voltage actually applied.
